A Style That Refuses to Be Boxed In:
Roman Zeltser – A Lifelong Journey Through Art.
Roman Zeltser is a self-taught artist whose creative journey spans decades, continents, and life chapters. Born in 1952, he began painting in the 1970s, driven by pure passion rather than formal training. His early works revealed a natural talent, but after emigrating to the United States in 1989, Roman set aside his artistic pursuits to support his family and build a successful technical career.
For over 30 years, the canvas remained untouched—until retirement offered a chance to reconnect with his creative roots. His first painting after the long hiatus was a deeply personal portrait of his 2-year-old granddaughter. The piece took six months to complete, and acknowledged that his artistic instincts had not faded.
Roman’s work defies categorization. From portraits and still life to nature, science fiction, and thematic explorations, his portfolio reflects a fearless curiosity and a refusal to be confined to a single style. He has also honed his technique by recreating masterworks, studying light, shadow, and color with precision.
Roman’s work masterfully blends vivid realism with expressive brushwork, capturing intimate moments and striking characters against richly crafted settings. His keen eye for light and texture brings an emotional depth to each composition, whether portraying quiet reflection or vibrant scenes of daily life. With a compelling balance of mood and detail, Roman invites viewers into a world where narrative and atmosphere intertwine seamlessly.
Unlike many artists who settle into a single style, Roman thrives on exploration. His portfolio spans a wide range of subjects and genres—portraits, still life, landscapes, science fiction, and thematic illustrations. He also enjoys drawing and experimenting with different techniques.
To deepen his understanding of painting fundamentals, Roman created master copies of works by renowned painters. This hands-on study helped him refine his grasp of values, chroma, light, and shadow—skills that now inform his own unique creations.
Expect the unexpected in Roman’s work. His paintings often surprise viewers with their diversity, crossing boundaries of style and subject matter with ease. Each piece reflects not only his technical growth but also his lifelong curiosity and creative spirit.
